YEREVAN. – The US State of California Senate decision on the recognition of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) is an important milestone for both Armenia and NKR.  

Armenia’s opposition Free Democrats Party has issued a statement with the aforesaid words.

“This decision is yet another incentive in the international recognition of NKR’s independence.

“We hope that this decision by the Congress of California will be ‘catching’ also for the other US states and, ultimately, the US President and Congress likewise will recognize Nagorno-Karabakh’s [NK] independence and support the right to self-determination of the people of NK.

“We are confident that the strengthening and progress of democracy in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is a proof to the international community that the international recognition of NKR’s independence has no alternative,” the statement also reads.

The California State Senate on Wednesday passed, by an overwhelming majority of votes, Assembly member Mike Gatto’s resolution (AJR 32) on the recognition of the independence and self-determination of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR), or Artsakh.   

AJR 32 encourages Artsakh’s continuing efforts to develop as a free and independent nation and formally calls upon the President and Congress of the United States to support the self-determination and democratic independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
