YEREVAN. – Armenia’s opposition MP, former FM Alexander Arzumanyan continues to insist that Armenia should not join the Russia-led Customs Union.

Arzumanyan himself told the aforesaid to reporters on Wednesday.

“Exactly one year has passed since the statement on Armenia’s joining the Customs Union. [But] a completely different political situation has formed during this period, and [therefore] a question rises: Is it right to join a union against which the EU and the US impose sanctions?” Arzumanyan stated.

In his words, solely the EU will help the development of Armenia’s economy, and therefore the country should refuse to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU).

“The Eurasian Economic Union is an organization of force where the oligarch rules. In this case, Armenia needs to maneuver, develop a new policy so that the ‘and, and’ precept works. We [Armenia] need to be a reliable partner.

“I continue to claim that the agreement [on Armenia’s EaEU accession] definitely will be signed, but it will not work, just as the CIS doesn’t [really] exist; it’s not an established organization,” Alexander Arzumanyan concluded.

After his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 3, 2013, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan had announced Armenia’s wish to join the Customs Union. At present, however, the matter of Armenia’s Eurasian Economic Union accession is discussed. The Armenian authorities claim that the respective agreement will be signed by no later than October of this year.
