YEREVAN. – The rumors, according to which Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan will be appointed Armenia’s next judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), have no connection with reality.

The attorney general’s advisor, Kristine Melkonyan, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“Kostanyan is the Armenian government representative at ECtHR. He is also included in the committee that selects Armenia’s nominated candidates for the position of ECtHR judge, and he does not plan on replacing Alvina Gyulumyan,” Melkonyan said.

As reported earlier, the position of Armenia’s representative at ECtHR is vacant because Armenia’s representative, Judge Alvina Gyulumyan, was recalled ahead of time and appointed Constitutional Court judge, Zhamanak daily reported.

“Now, a contest [for Armenia’s next judge at ECtHR] is announced and a document acceptance process is underway, which will run until September 24.  

“Zhamanak has learned, however, that Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan is viewed as Armenia’s most likely representative at ECtHR. At present, Kostanyan’s matter is put for a serious discussion,” Zhamanak wrote.
