YEREVAN. – The Customs Union (CU) has mixed into the Eurasian Economic Union (EaEU), and therefore the CU is no longer relevant, whereas Armenia’s EaEU accession matter is still being discussed.

Boris Navasardyan, President of Yerevan Press Club in Armenia’s capital city, stated the above-said at a press conference on Thursday.

“It’s been a year since [Armenian President] Serzh Sargsyan’s announcement that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union. It was assumed that there was no problem in Armenia’s joining the CU, [and solely] Armenia’s [respective] agreement remained.

“But we ourselves became convinced in the future that Armenia’s intention to become an EaEU member did not materialize. Quite a lot has changed,” Navasardyan said.

In his view, it is yet unclear what will be decided on October 10 with respect to Armenia’s EaEU accession.

“I don’t think that [EaEU member] Kazakhstan would want Armenia to join the Eurasian Economic Union, since if we [Armenia] join, it would mean that Russia’s votes will double in this union. Apparently, secret negotiations are conducted,” Navasardyan stated.

Armenia’s EaEU accession agreement is expected to be signed at the meeting of the leaders of the EaEU member states (Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus), which will be held on October 10 in Belarusian capital city Minsk.
