YEREVAN. – Armenia needs to re-negotiate with Russia regarding joining the Eurasian Economic Union, since signing a treaty with a country under sanctions will mean “death with friends.”
Opposition MP, former FM Alexander Arzumanyan noted the aforementioned at a press conference on Friday, and expressed the hope that this treaty will never be signed.
“Our [Armenian] officials say that a customs checkpoint will not be set up between Armenia and the NKR [i.e., the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic], but the development shows something else. I say customs checkpoint at first, then the border, [and] then the Russian troops; this will lead to genocide.
“This is a good opportunity that we reconsider our view and say to our partners that it should be reviewed, [that] we are against it. [But] if such a condition is put, we should propose that a customs checkpoint be set up between Russia and Crimea, too.
“At this time there is a chance to re-negotiate. A year ago, we were negotiating with a normal Russia, [but] today, Russia is under sanctions; it is left alone,” Arzumanyan specifically stated.
