The new British Government did not review its policy toward Armenia, British Ambassador to Armenia Charles Lonsdale stated at a June 28 press-conference.
He stressed Great Britain seeks to maintain close relations with all the countries in the region. Asked whether an energy factor does not play a role in closer relations between Great Britain and Azerbaijan, the Ambassdor said the energy factor is always a crucial element in bilateral relations, thus Great Britain will henceforth seek close cooperation with Azerbaijan. However, this also refers to Armenia. Having common interest in cooperating with one side does not mean not cooperating with other countries in other directions of mutual interest.
Lonsdale said Great Britain will maintain constructive cooperation with Armenia, NATO and EU. He also stressed the need to intensify bilateral business contacts. Speaking of the impact the recent financial crisis has had on the South Caucasus, the Ambassador said there are yet no critical changes in the region though some progress has been achieved.
