Any concrete conclusions from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s visit to Armenia are difficult to make for lack of information. It remains unclear what particular issues official Yerevan raised at the meetings, Hrair Karapetyan, the Chairman of the Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs, RA Parliament, member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARD), told NEWS.am.

“We expected Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian to tell straightforward what issues had been raised by official Yerevan at the meetings with the U.S. Secretary of State. Her answers did not make it clear what had been discussed either,” he said.

He pointed out his disappointment at Hillary Clinton’s statements on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “In her statements she did not say which side was the target of the recent provocations on the contact line between the Azerbaijani and Nagorno-Karabakh armed forces. She did not condemn that country’s actions, but only got off with diplomatic appeals for not using force,” Karapetyan said. During her visit to the region, the U.S. Secretary of State did not clarify the points of the statement on Nagorno-Karabakh by the U.S., Russian, and French Presidents; she did not clarify the meaning of the phrase “occupied territories”, what is the future of the Azerbaijan-occupied Armenian territories, namely, Artsvashen, Getashen, Martunashen and Shahumyan; she did not clarify the mechanisms of Stepanakert’s participation in the negotiations or the details of a referendum on Nagorno-Karabakh’s status. “So official Yerevan should not be enthusiastic about the U.S. Secretary of State’s visit to Armenia,” Karapetyan said. Moreover, after Hillary Clinton spoke of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem, her speech gradually rounded into the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation process.

“Evidence thereof is the fact that however much the superpowers speak of any lack of link between the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and Armenian-Turkish reconciliation, they actually make them conditional on each other. In this matter Turkish diplomacy achieved its aim,” Karapetyan said.
