“I do not expect any significant progress in the Karabakh peace process at the pentalateral meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers with Bernard Kouchner, Sergey Lavrov and Hillary Clinton in Almaty, RA NA Vice Speaker Samvel Nikoyan told NEWS.am.

“Even after the Obama, Sarkozy and Medvedev statement on Nagorno-Karabakh, stressing the nation’s right to self-determination, Azerbaijan keeps on singing the favorite tune about the big question,” he said.

According to Nikoyan, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s statement Kalbajar and Lachin will be ceded to Azerbaijan at the first stage, testimonies to the fact that Azerbaijani side does not clearly realize what it wants. “Baku’s stance greatly differs from those of the Armenian side and OSCE MG Co-Chairs. Azerbaijan does not accept a compromise settlement of the conflict,” he noted.

Nikoyan stressed the progress in the peace process may be achieved, only when Azerbaijan overtly recognizes the principle of nation’s right to self-determination.

As NEWS.am reported previously, a pentalateral meeting of Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers with their French, Russian and U.S. counterparts is planned on the sidelines of informal OSCE ministerial meeting in Almaty, to be held on July 16-17.
