A new nuclear-power plant (NPP) will be constructed in Armenia by 2016, RA Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan stated on July 14. The expected capacity of the new NPP is 1,200 MW. The Minister pointed out that no energy surplus should be expected in Armenia, and a 25-year energy supply agreement is in effect with Iran.

A company was founded with a view to constructing an NPP in cooperation with Rosatom, which suggested the new NPP would be constructed in cooperation with Russia. However, six more countries are interested in the construction, and each of them is willing to join the company. "The economic data will soon be available. The organizations are waiting for them to intensify negotiations," Movsisyan said.

The new NPP will be constructed on the site of the currently operating NPP in Metsamor.
