Armenian specialists can design chips, but chips are not produced in Armenia. Designed and tested chips are exported. As a result, Armenia gets only 10% of the proceeds from the sale of chips produced in other countries, Armen Grigoryan, Secretary of the RA Information Technologies Development Council told NEWS.am. He pointed out that chip production is possible in the countries with necessary climatic conditions (minimal variation of temperature and pressure, zero dust level). Such conditions are normally available near the sea.

Armenia is far from meeting the aforementioned standards. Therefore, hermetical earthquake-proof bunkers need to be built in Armenia for chip production, which requires at least U.S. $1bn, Grigoryan said.

“Such investments in chip production are economically sound, as they can ensure profits several times as much,” Grigoryan said. The annual profits from chip design and testing total U.S. $100m, and the profits from chip production can total U.S. $1bn.

This is considered a priority field throughout the world, but only a few companies produce chips.
