Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili’s proposal for the establishment of confederative relations with Georgia is a mere situational statement, member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Chairman of Javakhk Compatriotic Union Shirak Torosyan told NEWS.am.

According to him, at the beginning of the 20th century, Georgia, with the active participation of Azerbaijan, also offered to establish a confederation of the three South Caucasian states to oppose the Bolshevik Russia.

“Presently Georgia faces loss of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and with the help of Azerbaijan, seeks to combine efforts against Russia, thus indirectly against Armenia, taking advantage of the situation in which Azerbaijani occurred, after the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh,” Torosyan said.

According to him, Georgia has far-reaching aims. It tries to incite Azerbaijan to use Turkey, therefore the Muslim world against Russia.

“Despite the idea is unlikely to be implemented, Azerbaijan’s interests aimed at isolating Armenia directly match with Georgia’s intentions,” he said.

Torosyan stressed Georgia will face another problem in several decades. According to unofficial data, the number of Meskhetian Turks reaches 500.000. Then Georgia’s policy may change and turn to another force in its struggle against the increasing Azerbaijani population in the country.
