Azerbaijan is expecting the U.S. Senate to hold a confirmation hearing for Matthew Bryza, the U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan nominee. The Turan News Agency reports that the Senators are determined to get answers to numerous questions from Bryza. Some of the questions concern the diplomat’s personal life. Many of them have been suggested by the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), which has collected discrediting evidence about him and submitted it to the Senate.

Among the “difficult-to-answer” questions are, particularly, Bryza’s contradictory statements on the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process and democracy in Azerbaijan. He will also be reminded of his marriage with Zeyno Baran, the presence of Azerbaijani government officials at his wedding and many other things.

A number of Senators intend to demand explanations for the U.S. Administration and Department of State turning a blind eye to violations of democracy in Azerbaijan and, in this context, about Bryza’s plans.

U.S., Senators are also expecting official Baku to keep its promise to release the bloggers, as well as Eynullah Fatulliyev, on the occasion of National Press Day. Baku’s keeping its promises would help Bryza’s confirmation as U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan, the source says.
