Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also joined the statements made by Turkish authorities after the Pope Francis’ declaration.

During a meeting with Turkish exporters he said that he thought the pope was a different kind of leader, the Turkish newspaper Haberler reports.

Erdogan said that he condemned the mistake made by the Pope and warned him against making it again.

At the Mass held on Sunday at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis declared that the 'the first genocide of the 20th Century', struck the Armenian people.

Turkey’s foreign minister, prime-minister and other officials sharply responded to this, but the Pope didn’t take back his words. Moreover, the following day after the statement he repeated that “the way of church is that of openness and speaking freely” and that “Christians must be ready to proclaim the truth boldly”.
