The fact that Russia intends to supply two batteries of S-300PMU2 Favorit air-defense system to Azerbaijan causes concern, the Chairman of RA NA Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Hrayr Karapetyan told NEWS.am.

According to him, it is dangerous when a country intending to supply arms to Azerbaijan ignores permanent warlike statements voiced by Baku.  “By selling arms to Azerbaijan, each of the countries in fact contributes to Azerbaijan’s armament and Baku's aspirations to unleash war. Defense Committee is particularly concerned over Russia’s selling of air-defense system to Azerbaijan. I intended to raise the question during the forthcoming CSTO summit to be held in autumn in Saint Petersburg to listen to the explanations of Russia, our strategic ally,” he stated.

The MP noted that they have information proving that other countries sell arms to Azerbaijan as well. “The list involves CSTO member states and the countries not included in the block, for instance some western states and the countries of Southern Africa,” Hrayr Karapetyan stressed, adding that Armenia must raise the point in international agencies at least at parliamentary level.

He also stated that Russia, as a CSTO member along with Armenia, should have given preference to Armenia. “As to Azerbaijan’s obsession with buying arms, we have noticed that the country purchases different kinds of weapons, not taking into account the usage peculiarities,” he concluded.
