Russia, as a member of the OSCE Minsk Group, should not contribute to the increase of militarization in the region, the chairman of the Analytical Center on Globalization and Regional Cooperation Stepan Grigoryan told NEWS.am. The political scientist commented on Russia’s intention to supply two batteries of S-300PMU2 Favorit air-defense system to Azerbaijan.
According to him, in case the information is true, Armenia should demand explanations from Russia, its strategic ally. “I do not think that selling of arms to Azerbaijan is in Russia’s commercial interests only,” the expert noted.
Stepan Grigoryan emphasized that the intention of the RA Standing Committee on Defense to raise the issue during CSTO summit scheduled for autumn will be overdue. He stressed that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will pay a visit to Armenia in August. According to him, Armenia should not wait for autumn but clarify Russia’s stance in the course of the President’s visit.
