The International Court of Justice verdict on Kosovo cannot be considered as a precedent for other frozen conflicts, Sabine Freizer, the Europe program director of the International Crisis Group told RFE/RL Azerbaijani service.

The expert deems that the verdict by International Court indicated that declaration of Kosovo’s independence does not contradict international law.

Asked about the consequences, in case Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia, Abkhazia or Transnistria file a lawsuit, Freizer noted that unrecognized republics cannot appeal to the International Court.

According to her, Karabakh should be supported by the majority of UN General Assembly members to sustain its plea in the International Court. The same should be done in the UN Security Council. However, in this case the side filing a lawsuit should be a UN member. Karabakh is not a UN member, thus it cannot appeal to the court, she stressed.
