The Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict zone is the only region in the world where ceasefire regime is maintained by the conflicting parties only. This is a considerable achievement, as such, and it proves that the sides are capable of maintaining peace without any external interference, NKR President Bako Sahakyan said in an interview with Interfax news agency.

The final deployment of peacekeepers might be considered only at the final stage of the peace process when consensus is reached and the sides enter phase of implementation of the arrangements, he emphasized.

“We are absolutely confident that the resolution of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict should be based on compromises. It is necessary to realize that return to 1988 situation, concerning the matter of status and territories, is out of the question,” NKR President stressed.

Bako Sahakyan noted that ‘territories for peace’ principle is not only unacceptable but is also fraught with unpredictable consequences for the entire region. Mutual concessions should be comparable. Peace can be proposed only in return for peace.
