By organizing discussion on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Azerbaijan aims at getting its ideas of territorial integrity legitimized, Stepan Safaryan, Chairman of the Heritage parliamentary faction, told reporters on August 2.

After getting such documents approved, Azerbaijan uses them against Armenia, forcing it into unilateral concessions.

“Or such documents will be used by Azerbaijan to justify the restoration of its territorial integrity at any cost,” Safaryan said. Armenia must prevent Azerbaijan from achieving its aims not only in NATO, but also at all the other international institutions, he said.

Safaryan stated his intention to address letters to his partners at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and NATO commissions and call on them to refrain from voicing their opinions on the Azerbaijan-introduced document. “If the NATO PA develops this initiative by Azerbaijan, it, therefore, assumes responsibility for Baku’s aims – legalizing war – and Baku needs such documents,” Safaryan said.

If NATO wants help the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, it should first of all consider the fact that it is Azerbaijan’s militant rhetoric that is a major threat to the negotiations.

At its session in Warsaw, the NATO PA is expected to adopt a resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh. Speaker of the RA Parliament Hovik Abrahamyan addressed a letter to NATO saying that a resolution would affect the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
