The United States (US) is ready to assist the post-Soviet countries in preparing for European Union (EU) membership, said US Senator Chris Murphy speaking to the Voice of America.

Murphy stated the aforesaid commenting on the EU Eastern Partnership Summit that was held in the Latvian capital city of Riga, and which brought together the leaders of the EU and six post-Soviet states, including Armenia. 

In the senator’s words, the US needs to assist the post-Soviet countries that expect to become EU members, and first of all, Georgia and Ukraine. He is convinced that in doing so, Washington will also send a clear message to Moscow.  

Chris Murphy said they need to show Russian President Vladimir Putin that when it comes to the expansion of NATO, or the deepening of other countries’ cooperation with the EU, Putin has no veto power, and he is not the one to decide who will join NATO, or the EU.
