YEREVAN. - Several dozens of Armenia’s Nairit rubber factory workers demonstrated in front of the parliament building Tuesday. The workers demanded parliamentary hearings on restarting operations of the factory and liquidating arrears of wages.

“Because the parliament holds hearings on power sector, we’d like them to hold discussions and find proper solutions for these matters as well,” factory spokesman Anush Harutyunyan told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

The demonstrators were approached by Armenia’s Prosperous Armenia faction MPs Vahe Enfiajyan, Vahan Babayan, Mikayel Melkumyan, as well as Levon Zourabyan from Armenian National Congress faction and Zaruhi Postanjyan from Heritage faction.

“The MPs voiced support to us, stating that they will do their best to help us. And we have two issues here: liquidation of debts and re-operation of the factory,” Harutyunyan said.

The next demonstration by the factory workers will be held next Thursday in front of the government building. “We are still waiting to meet with the PM. If we don’t manage, we will not only go on a sit-down strike, but will also take harsher measures,” she said.

Wage arrears of the factory workers for 18-24 months constitute roughly $15 million. It is not the first time the factory workers have been holding such demonstrations in front of the government and parliamentary buildings.
