Denmark authorities help former youth drug abusers and criminals, sending them on sailing voyages in the Caribbean, The Telegraph reports. Local councils in the country have already spent a combined £4m for this kind of rehabilitation projects.
Such voyages are organized by Den Maritime Base. According to the data available, 59 young criminals spent a year or more on board the two Den Maritime Base vessels. The voyage of each passenger cost the Danish taxpayers £70 thousand, Gazeta reports.
According to some project organizers, the Caribbean can seem an exotic destination, but it’s important to note that it’s not about holiday, but about the opportunity the youth gets to spend time in a different atmosphere.
The article also notes that after returning one of the participants of such voyage began dealing drugs, and then joined a street gang.
