Belgium’s parliamentary opposition agreed on joint amendments to the bill of resolution on acknowledging the Armenian Genocide, urging the Federal government to recognize it. The proposals of the opposition forces were submitted to one of the committees of Belgium’s Chamber of Representatives.

The bill of the resolution introduced by Georges Dallemagne from the Humanist Democratic Centre (cdH) party is on the agenda of the Foreign Relations Committee of Belgium’s Chamber of Representatives, the Belgian website 7sur7 reports. The resolution proposes to expand the recognition of the Armenian Genocide to Assyrians and Greeks as well.

The amendments partly propose the parliament to request the Federal government ‘to declare by means of a governmental decision that Belgium publicly acknowledges the Genocide, which the Armenian people fell victim to in 1915.”  

The parliamentary majority drew up the bill of the resolution in memory of the Armenian Genocide committed a decade ago. However, the representatives of the opposition forces proposed to make amendments to the text, since the bill didn’t openly require the government of Belgium to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide.

Belgium Senate recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1998 by passing a corresponding resolution.
