US President Barack Obama must make a statement on the acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide, Professor Maral Atallah from the US Humboldt State University, who is taking part in the ‘Comparative Analysis of 20th Century Genocides” conference held by the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS), told Armenian News – NEWS.am. 

“I’m very disappointed with the reaction, or I would say, the insufficient reaction from my country regarding the Armenian Genocide. Our President was making statements on acknowledging the Armenian Genocide before becoming the US President. He stated that the Armenian Genocide did take place, that this is a fact and it’s true. He hasn’t done it yet after being elected as a president,” Atallah said.

Following April 14 of the current year, she decided to either phone or write to the official mail of the White House every week, urging the President to act correctly and keep his promise. Atallah said, she’s going to do this until the end of Obama’s term, since he has promised to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide as a president. “I consider this as my own mission; some of my students write and phone to the White House as well,” she said.

Touching on the results of her actions, Atallah said she has none yet. “When phoning to the White House, you leave a message which the operator directs to the President. They usually say they will pass the message to the president, but the last time I phoned the person on the other end of the line responded: “I also hope the United States will act correctly.” According to the professor, this was unheard of, since the work of this person is not to respond, but this, she says, adds to the hope that another man thinks they will achieve the acknowledgement of the Armenian Genocide.”
