Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who is presently on an official visit to Baku, for the first time accepted responsibility for the assassination of Hrant Dink, noting that relevant measures were not taken to prevent the crime.

Talking to the reporters before his departure for Azerbaijan, Gul stressed that unfortunately “our citizen Hrant Dink was assasinated, as measures to prevent the crime were not taken”, Vatan reported.   

The chief editor of Agos daily appealed to the European Court of Human Rights to challenge the judgment by the Turkish court a week before he was killed. After his death Dink’s family also filed a lawsuit against the Turkish authorities who failed to prevent journalist’s assassination.

In an official response sent to the European Court, the Turkish Government noted that Hrant Dink was insulting Turkish identity.
