The Armenian-Russian cooperation is developing in the right direction and Dmitry Medvedev’s forthcoming visit to Armenia testifies to this as well, Secretary of the ruling Republican Party Eduard Sharmazanov told the journalists today.

According to him, Russian President’s visit is important for two reasons: military-political aspect and strengthening of economic cooperation. In military-political cooperation the focal point is an agreement that will prolong Russian military presence in Armenia for 49 years, he said, adding that presence of Russian base in the region (in Gyumri) solves the problem of balance of forces. The Armenian-Russian cooperation is one of the guarantors of Armenia’s national security. It is in Armenia’s interests and is for the benefit of two friendly states, Republican MP stated. In 21st century each country wishing to have heightened security should be involved in a certain block, Sharmazanov concluded.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will arrive on a state visit to Armenia on August 19.
