YEREVAN. – Given the fact that there are disagreements between Russia and Iran in numerous economic issues, Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) can cause problems for the country.

Ambassador Ara Papyan, who is a political scientist and Director of the Modus Vivendi Center in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan, said the aforementioned at Monday’s discussion entitled “Prospects for Armenian-Iranian Strategic Partnership.”

Papyan recalled that he has always been against Armenia’s joining the EEU, which also Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan—and also Kyrgyzstan, in several days.

“One reason is that, after this accession, the Armenia-Iran border has become an EEU-Iran border, at least in terms of customs,” noted the analyst. “Our [i.e. Armenia’s] [customs] rates basically are not valid, and all this is governed by one center, which is Russia.”
