YEREVAN. - Construction of the third high-voltage electrical transmission line (ETL) between Iran and Armenia will begin in the second half of August.

According to Armenia’s High-Voltage Electric Networks CJSC press-service, EUR 107,9 million necessary for the project will be transferred by the Iranian side.

Export Development Bank of Iran and Armenia’s High-Voltage Electric Networks CJSC signed a financial agreement in Tehran on August 9. Under the agreement, 77% of the mentioned amount will be provided by the aforementioned bank, while the rest 23% will be covered by the main project contractor, Iranian SUNIR company, with which the High-Voltage Electric Networks signed a construction agreement on Wednesday.

The overall length of the Armenian section of the line will be 273 km.

Construction of the third ETL and Noravan substation will allow to bring the energy exchange capacity from 350 to 1000 MWt, increasing the security of the central sections and parallel work of the two systems, as well as the energy security of Armenia.  

According to Aram Ananyan, General Director of High-Voltage Electric Networks, the third line will increase the possibility of regional integration. Thus, power grids of Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Russia and, why not, Turkey can join and work simultaneously.

Construction of the 3rd ETL is planned to be implemented in 24 months.
