Russia is looking into the opportunity of taking part in the construction of the new electrical power unit at Armenia’s NPP, according to the materials related to the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s visit to Russia.

In March 2014, the Armenian Government adopted a decision on extending the exploitation of the NPP’s second electrical power unit considering the delays in the new electrical power unit construction. “Rosatom” in line with the Armenian experts has agreed to work on the implementation of a project on extending the deadlines for the unit exploitation until 2026, RIA Novosti reports.

Besides contributing to the insurance of secure exploitation of the Armenian NPP, the Russian side is looking into the opportunities for taking part in the construction of the new electrical power unit.   

In December 2014, Russia and Armenia signed an agreement on cooperation in extending the exploitation of the Armenian NPP’s second electrical power unit till 2026. In February, an agreement on providing the Armenian Government with loans for funding of this work was signed in Moscow. In the framework of the agreement, Russia will provide Armenia with a loan in the amount of $270 million, as well as a grant in the amount of $30 million.
