The launch of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant will not affect Armenian-Iranian energy cooperation, Ara Marjanyan, U.N. energy expert, stated in an interview with RFE/RL.

According to him, the previously signed gas and electric energy contracts will not be amended. The expert pointed out the high importance of the Bushehr NPP in the context of nuclear programs implemented in the region.

As to the possibility of Armenian-Iranian nuclear cooperation, particularly in operating the Bushehr NPP, in the context of Armenia’s experience, Marjanyan said that Armenia may propose personnel training in the future.

“Our atomic energy sector has serious simulation modeling potential and highly experienced personnel. In this regard, we may have prospects for holding training courses,” the expert said.

Marjanyan does not rule out cooperation in distant future if Armenia is able to produce nuclear fuel.

An official launch ceremony of the Bushehr NPP was held on 21 August 2010 as Iran began loading the plant with fuel.
