YEREVAN. – The “No” front, which is formed against the draft amendments to the Constitution, will not achieve success.

Member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction, Levon Martirosyan, stated the above-said at a press conference on Monday.

In Martirosyan’s words, the view, according to which the country’s authorities are conducting constitutional reforms to remain in power, is erroneous.

“It’s normal that the authorities want to reproduce; there is nothing criminal in this,” added the RPA MP. “[But] President [and RPA Chairman] Serzh Sargsyan has announced that, after the [constitutional] amendments, he doesn’t want to assume any public office.”

He noted that the draft constitutional reform will be debated at the NA plenary session to get underway on Tuesday.

As per Martirosyan, the Armenian body politic is ready to switch to a parliamentary system of government.

In the RPA deputy’s words, they have high expectations from the respective parliamentary discussions because if the constitutional reform passes, Armenia will enter into a new phase of development,

Levon Martirosyan expressed a view that the draft constitutional reform has received virtually no criticism from the opposition political forces.

He added that the final draft of constitutional amendments shall be put to referendum by the year’s end.

The new draft Constitution of Armenia has been forwarded to the NA, and the respective parliamentary debates will get underway on Tuesday. Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
