YEREVAN. – Under the new Constitution, Armenia will not be a one-person political party.

Constitutional law expert Vardan Poghosyan, who is also a member of the President-affiliated Specialized Committee on Constitutional Reforms, noted the aforesaid at Wednesday’s National Assembly (NA) session, as he continued introducing the proposed constitutional reform.

As per Poghosyan, parties, where everything begins and ends with one man, have appeared in the country since 1991, the year of Armenia’s independence.

In his view, the reason for the emergence of such political parties is that their objective is to win the presidential elections.

“But if the main role passes to the parliament, the parties will be interested in the development of a culture of team leadership and internal party democracy,” added Vardan Poghosyan.

The new draft Constitution of Armenia is debated in the NA. Pursuant to this draft, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
