YEREVAN. – In January 2009, the Government of Armenia had declared September 18 Astronomy Day.

September 18 was selected because world-renowned Armenian scientist, founder of theoretical astrophysics, National Hero of Armenia, Academician Victor Ambartsumian was born on that day in 1908 in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Then Minister of Education and Science of Armenia, Spartak Seyranyan, had noted that Ambartsumian’s legacy is a huge contribution to world of astronomy.

A planet and Armenia’s Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, whose founder is the great academician, are named after numerous awards’ recipient Victor Ambartsumian, informed Calend.
