YEREVAN. – The draft constitutional reform has nothing in common with the political destiny of President Serzh Sargsyan.

Vice President of the National Assembly (NA), Eduard Sharmazanov, who is also spokesperson of the Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), stated the aforementioned Thursday at the NA. Sharmazanov noted this commenting on the opposition’s contention that the this reform aims to extend Sargsyan’s rule.

“Serzh Sargsyan is the RPA leader, and he will stay [so] for long,” he said. “And you [i.e. the opposition Armenian National Congress], if you want to become the authorities, you can just run in the elections, for starters.”

The new draft Constitution of Armenia is debated in the NA. Pursuant to this draft, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
