YEREVAN. – After the constitutional reform in Armenia, not the state, represented by the Government, but the political parties will be accountable before the people of the country.

Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) deputy Hakob Hakobyan stated the aforementioned at Friday’s special National Assembly (NA) session, and devoted to the ongoing debates on the new draft Constitution.

In his words, if people express dissatisfaction with the current social situation in the country, pursuant to the proposed constitutional amendments, they will no longer make demands from the state, but from the party they have elected to form the government.

“[And] given the increasing role of the [political] parties, the MPs that have entered the [Armenian] parliament shall not change the factions,” added Hakobyan. “If the voter has entrusted the MP a seat in the parliament on behalf of a particular party, later he is accountable for his work and overseeing the government.

“He is accountable before the electorate of the given party, and this means he, after entering the parliament, shall not seek more suitable parties there.”

The new draft Constitution of Armenia is debated in the NA. Pursuant to this draft, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
