Russia has not sold S-300 air-defense systems to Azerbaijan. This is just unverified information in circulation, political scientist Levon Shirinyan stated at a press conference on Thursday.

However, the analyst did not rule out the deal may be made in the future. “If this happens, Armenia will be deprived of an opportunity to make preventive attacks on Azerbaijan,” he said, adding the issue needs to be explained.

Referring to the protocols on a longer presence of the Russian military base in Armenia, Shirinyan underlined if the hostilities resume in the region, Russia will be obliged to ensure Armenia’s security jointly with the Armenian troops, following its commitments. “Besides, the presence of the Russian base ensures modernization of the Armenia army, which makes us less vulnerable,” he emphasized.

“As of the possible deployment of the Turkish military base in Nakhchivan, this is unlikely to happen unless the two guarantors of Nakhchivan, namely Russia and Turkey agree on it. If the Turkish base is deployed in Nakhchivan, the issue on Armenian lands will be raised and the historical truth will speak,” Shirinyan concluded.
