YEREVAN. – Secretary of the Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction, Gagik Melikyan, is convinced that the statement by the head of the opposition Armenian National Congress NA Faction, Levon Zurabyan, and with respect to “bribing” the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission), is groundless.

Melikyan, speaking to Armenian News-NEWS.am, specifically added: “I believe, in the political sense, he [i.e. Zurabyan] did this for PR purposes. Zurabyan’s statement is unfounded, he can never substantiate it, and the rest is in the legal field.”

During a parliamentary briefing on October 9, Levon Zurabyan had stated that the public of Armenia does not support the proposed constitutional amendments. In this connection, he had said that the sole job of Constitutional Court President Gagik Harutyunyan, who is also Chairman of the President-affiliated Specialized Committee on Constitutional Reforms, was to bribe the Venice Commission.

The police are investigating this case.
