YEREVAN. – An opportunity has been created for Armenia’s fragmented opposition to consolidate.

Opposition “New Armenia” Public Salvation Front Political Council member Garegin Chugaszyan, who is also member of the opposition Founding Parliament initiative, on Wednesday stated the aforesaid as he introduced the platform of this front.

In Chugaszyan’s words, there is a unique opportunity now to make radical changes, the political opposition forces are consolidated, they are gaining experience, and the party in power has trapped itself by launching constitutional amendments.

“The Constitution can have a meaning only if constitutionality functions, which, however, doesn’t function,” he said. “Perhaps this is why the majority of the people [in Armenia] are instinctively apathetic towards the constitutional amendments.”

Another member of the abovementioned front, Hmayak Hovhannisyan, who is also Chairman of the Politologists’ Union of Armenia, in turn, stressed that they are going to change the regime and ensure the sovereignty of Armenia.

The “New Armenia” Public Salvation Front was officially formed on October 12. Its members state that they will change the country’s ruling regime by December 6.

On October 5, the National Assembly passed, and by a vast majority of votes, the decision on agreeing to hold a referendum on the draft amendments to the Constitution.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider these amendments to be the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.

The President has set December 6 as Referendum Day.
