YEREVAN. – The most important provision of the proposed constitutional amendments in Armenia is the switching to a parliamentary system of government, which will deepen democracy in the country.

Member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) National Assembly Faction, Karine Achemyan, stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Thursday.

In her words, the oversight functions of the political opposition also will intensify as a result of these constitutional amendments.

“The new document gives a great opportunity to ensure the independence of the judiciary,” Achemyan stressed. “A new document is currently being prepared between Armenia and the European Union, and the said constitutional amendments are acceptable also in this context.”

The RPA MP added that she supports the introduction and development of a culture of referendum in Armenia.

“Our first objective is to contribute so that there will not be uninformed people in the provinces and the capital city [of the country],” she said. “Everything must be done so that the referendum rouses trust to the citizens.”

The constitutional referendum of Armenia is slated for December 6.
