YEREVAN. – Everything must be done that the law initiative, which the ruling Republican Party of Armenia MPs have proposed and which gives the citizens the right to vote also with an identification (ID) card, does not pass.

Secretary of the opposition Armenian National Congress National Assembly (ANC NA) Faction, Aram Manukyan, on Monday told the abovementioned to reporters in the NA.

“The masses in the republic are against the constitutional amendments, the authorities see this all too well, [and therefore] they are creating additional opportunities for [voting] fraud to themselves,” Manukyan said. “The problem here is not the 170 thousand citizens who only have ID cards, but the half a million citizens who have both a passport and an ID card. If during the elections it is not specified that they [already] have voted in the given election precinct, they can easily go and vote [again] in another election precinct.”

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
