Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) MP Artak Zakaryan is convinced that the opposition forces of the “No” front against the proposed constitutional amendments will not succeed in their efforts.

“They want to be guided by the principle that a part of the [country’s] society is discontent, and what the government offers is bad,” Zakaryan said at a press conference on Saturday. “Their actions are built on irrational steps, offering nothing. ‘No’ means staying where you are, [and] blaming all the problems on the current system, also in the future.”

As per the RPA deputy, the “No” front will say the same thing to the body politic all through the one-month campaign, whereas they, the “Yes” front, have a lot of work to do and have something to say to the public.

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6, and the respective campaign season had begun on October 10.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
