YEREVAN. – Opposition Armenian National Congress National Assembly (ANC NA) Faction Head Levon Zurabyan, who also heads the joint headquarters of the “No” campaign against the forthcoming constitutional referendum, is convinced that the whole Armenian society supports them.

Zurabyan, responding to a remark at Monday’s press conference, and regarding the authorities’ claims that the “No” front is a small number, stressed: “Had the authorities been honest, they would have accepted that our [“No”] army is the entire people.” 

In Zurabyan’s words, the Armenian body politic does not wish to vote in the upcoming constitutional plebiscite. In his view, it is difficult to convince people who have seen election fraud to take part and vote “no” in this referendum.

The ANC NA Faction leader expressed a conviction, however, that solely the people can fight against election fraud by voting unanimously against the proposed constitutional amendments.

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
