YEREVAN. – The forces, which are against the constitutional amendments in Armenia, do not say why the Constitution is bad, and they solely urge the people to vote against because the authorities have launched it. 

Member of the Ruling Republican Party of Armenia National Assembly (RPA NA) Faction, Sukias Avetisyan, noted the above-said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, we don’t come across substantive discussions of the ‘No’ [front against the constitutional amendments],” Avetisyan said. “They continue linking the ‘no’ to the current societal condition, which has no connection with the constitutional amendments. This is just a whim for the opposition.” 

The RPA MP added that, unlike the “No” front, the “Yes” front is carrying out a substantive campaign, and it is explaining to the people the objective of and need for these constitutional amendments.

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
