The Lori District Court of First Instance of Armenia on Wednesday found Azerbaijani Turgay Mikhailov—who had illegally crossed the Georgian-Armenian border—guilty on the charges of border violation, and sentenced him to five months in prison.

The presiding judge, however, considered the starting date of Mikhailov’s sentence to be the actual day of his arrest—that is, July 23—, and therefore given that the duration of this sentence has ended, he lifted the restraining order of arrest, and released the Azerbaijani from the courtroom.

Upon the motion by Mikhailov’s legal defender, Sasun Mkhitaryan, the court hearing was closed, and the verdict was announced at the end of the session, which lasted about one hour.

According to the indictment, on July 23 at around 9pm, Mikhailov had bypassed Armenia’s state border crossings at the country’s boundary with Georgia—and without the necessary documents—, and illegally entered Armenia on foot, from Lori Province.

A criminal case was brought against the 35-year-old Azerbaijani, and on charges of illegally crossing the Armenian border. This offense is punishable by a fine, or imprisonment.

And Turgay Mikhailov was placed under arrest.
