YEREVAN. - Achievement of Armenia in 2015 was the accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) MP Artak Zakaryan, who is also Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, told the aforementioned to Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent.

According to him, Armenia can’t be said to have had serious achievements in economic terms. As to the political achievements, specifically the accession to the EEU, gives an opportunity to work towards getting political dividends in its framework, the MP said.

Referring to the opponents’ view that the accession to the EEU supposed security guarantees, but the tension on the border only escalated and the CSTO provided no support, Zakaryan said: “The security of Armenia is guaranteed by the Armed Forces of Armenia. Within the EEU, Armenian-Russian ties got closer and Armenia’s role in the CSTO enhanced. As to the victims on the border, we had them always.  What do we expect from the CSTO? The Kazakh troops to stand on the border? Yes, we expect political support from the CSTO, but even when we have it, Azerbaijan continues to fire. The U.S. constantly urges peaceful settlement, but what does Azerbaijan do? It continues to fire.”

To the question on whether the party considers as an achievement the break-up of the union between the Armenian National Congress (ANC) and the “Prosperous Armenia” party (PAP) (which stated about a joint struggle for power change in the beginning of the year), as well as the resignation of the PAP Leader Gagik Tsarukyan from politics, Zakaryan said: “PAP couldn’t carry out power change: it could only make the situation in the political landscape more complicated. The internal stability might be violated, and this would create additional problems for Armenia. Our colleagues realized this, ceased such action in due course and returned to a normal political life.”
