YEREVAN. – A total of 676 cases of emergency were recorded in Armenia, during the New Year holidays.

Director of the Crisis Management Center of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations, Hovhannes Khangeldyan, stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Monday.

He noted that 250 more cases of emergency were recorded in the country in the beginning of 2016,  as compared to the year past. As per Khangeldyan, this increase was due to the adverse weather conditions—i.e. snow, snowstorms, and high winds.

The Armenian official added that 25 car accidents—with one casualty—were recorded in Armenia during the New Year holidays.

Due to the motorways that were closed and difficult to drive during this time, the rescue workers rushed eight mothers-to-be to hospitals.

A total of 336 cases of emergency were recorded in capital city Yerevan, and they were primarily household-related calls.

Hovhannes Khangeldyan noted, however, that the number of fires that were registered in Armenia during the New Year holidays had not increased, as compared to last year.
