YEREVAN. – Bahraini citizen Radhi Fadhel Abbas Ahmed Ali, who was arrested in Armenia but later released, had left for Iran on his own volition. 

His attorney, Tigran Safaryan, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am, and noted that the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia had given him such a response.

“The [Armenian] Police denied that they were the ones to send Ali from Armenia, and the NSS neither denied nor confirmed,” Safaryan said. “It only answered that Ali left voluntarily, and all this was done for his safety.”

The attorney added that he has petitioned to the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia requesting the opening of a criminal case regarding the sending of this Bahraini citizen from Armenia to Iran.

As per Tigran Safaryan, when Ali had come out of prison, persons in civilian clothes had approached him, taken him to Zvartnots International Airport in capital city of Yerevan, and sent him to Iran. 

According to a police press release, Bahraini citizen Fadhel R. was found and detained on January 1, at Zvartnots International Airport.

Fadhel R. is on Bahrain’s international wanted list ever since May 25, 2014 on charges of attempted murder, illicit trafficking of explosives, damaging public and private property, mass promiscuity, and terrorism.

He was arrested and taken to a Yerevan Police detention center.

On the next day, head of the General Directorate of Anti-Corruption and Economic and Electronic Security of Bahrain announced that Fadhel R. had been sentenced to seven years in prison in Bahrain, and that measures are taken to have him returned to the country.

The Armenia-based human rights organizations, however, are very concerned about this because there are strict laws in Bahrain, and therefore Fadhel R. might be executed, if he is extradited to his country.

The Bahraini citizen was released from Armenian prison on February 1.
