Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) helps the country during the global economic crisis.

Director of the International Institute of New States, Russian analyst Alexey Martynov, stated the abovementioned.

In his words, first and foremost, EEU is an economic union which pursues economic gains, albeit it also contains a small amount of political element.

The analyst noted that he often comes across criticism in the Armenian press, and to the effect that Armenia’s accession to the EEU has changed nothing in the country’s economy.

“The situation is difficult everywhere. And no matter how much they try to divert the attention from the global economic crisis with various wars, it doesn’t change the situation,” Martynov noted. “But I can say that it’s easier to overcome the crisis together. Had Armenia not become a member of the EEU, coming out of the economic crisis ould have been difficult for it. It [i.e. the economic crisis] would have hit Armenia harder.” 

The EEU comprises Armenia, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan
