YEREVAN. – The draft Electoral Code, which the ruling Republican Party of Armenia has introduced, is not a code, but rather a statement that they are not going to leave power.

Head of the opposition “Heritage” National Assembly Faction, Zaruhi Postanjyan, noted the aforesaid at a press conference on Monday.

“This is the statement of today’s tyrannical rule,” Postanjyan added.

In the opposition MP’s words, even though a transition should be made toward a fully proportional election system in Armenia, this is non-existent in the draft Electoral Code that has been made public.

Under this new draft law, aside from proportional representation—i.e. political party lists—, there also will be regional electoral lists, which the political parties will likewise present.

The draft Electoral Code of Armenia is expected to be submitted to Parliament within the week.

Pursuant to this draft law, parliamentary elections will be single and nationwide in the country.

The new Electoral Code shall be adopted by June 1.
