YEREVAN. – March 8 International Women’s Day is a mere opportunity to organize family get-togethers in Armenia, Garun magazine editor Karine Khodikyan said at a pres conference on Tuesday.

“Each and every woman earns her rights to the extent of her intelligence and ability,” Khodikyan noted.

Vice-chairwoman of the opposition Free Democrats Party, Anush Sedrakyan, for her part, stated that ever since Armenia’s independence in 1991, Armenian women are endeavoring to gain their important place in society and politics.

Sedrakyan added that the Karabakh War gave a generation of triumphant women to Armenia.  

In Karine Khodikyan’s words, Armenian women have become more self-confident and stronger. 

“Most of the men [of Armenia] are outside [the country as migrant workers],” she added. “[Hence,] the women have taken the entire burden of the family upon themselves.”

As per Anush Sedrakyan, in order to have a healthy society, Armenian women need to posit other conditions and ambitions before the Armenian men.

“The [Armenian] woman shall demand to have a good country,” she added. “[And that] ‘I can be peaceful in this country.’”
