The Iran-Iraq War lasted from 1980 to 1988 and cost 200 thousand of Iranians lives. The president of Iran Hassan Rouhani presented these data speaking at a Congress dedicated to the Day of Remembrance for the fallen soldiers, TASS reports.

 “More than 200 thousand Iranians were killed during the war, which began in 1980 and continued for over 8 years,” declared the Iranian president.

The Iran–Iraq war which began in September 1980, ended in August 1988. Precise data concerning victims on both sides has not been revealed so far. Only separate assessments by  experts and political scientists have been provided and presented figures of 500 thousand to 1.5 million of the fallen on both sides.

On 9 June and 16 October 2008 Iran and Iraq, with the participation of the International Committee of the Red Cross signed  memorandum providing for collaborative actions on the search and identification of dead bodies,  search of information about people previously registered as prisoners of war and missing persons during the war.
